I was driving across north Alabama.
Money and gas were running out.
I was desperately looking for a job or something.
At my left I saw a signal.
Gurley 2 miles.
It doesn’t sound as a lucky town, but all I needed was some money, not a
happy life.
I used to have one some time ago.
I entered the town. Small and clean.
There was a bar, "Second Coming".
- A bar is as good as any other place, I said to myself.
It was dark inside compared to the sunny spring morning.
A black man was the only customer.
I took a seat next to him and asked the bartender for a glass of whiskey
and water. No ice.
The Jukebox was playing some old seventies` rock.
- You are not from here, are you?, asked the bartender.
- No, I was born very far from here. South America.
- Yes South America. Argentina, Colombia. Beautiful women
- Yes, sure you can say that.
- What are you doing here so far? he asked not too friendly.
- Just traveling.
He didn’t like the answer. I saw it in his face
- Look man, he said in a threatening mood
- My name is George, I interrupted him.
- Look George, this is a small town, we all know each other, know what I
mean?
- Nope
- Ok, dumb George. Listen, open your ears. We do not like people like you
here! Drink your whiskey and go away.!
Suddenly the black man spoke. He said in a deep voice.
- Hey Ned don’t be so rude to the foreigner. Maybe he is a good guy.
Probably he is not doing well. A good Christian like you is expected to
help him.
- Ok. If so, what help should be expected to be given.
- Don’t know. Some advice about where to get a job for instance.
I’ve heard that Bud needed help at the gas station.
- What do you think? asked the bartender, is that job good enough for you
Georgie?
I didn’t like the way things were going on, so I said.
- No, I am a Doctor, I know nothing about Gas Stations
- Oh! a Doctor, said Ned with irony. And What kind of doctor are you?
- I am a killing floor Doctor.
- What exciting!, Should it be possible for your eminence showing us some
of your work ?
- Sure Ned.
- Then... Go!!, shouted the angry bartender
A fast movement. I took my 38 special, pulled the trigger
only once and a bloody third eye appeared in Ned’s forefront
He fell slowly to the left without a sound
- Nice clean shot!, said the black man.
As fast as I could, I took all the money, gave him some of it and went away.
On the way out of town I stopped at the gas station and put some gas in
the old car. Not too much.
I was needing a new one. And very soon.
